FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Do I need insurance to attend therapy?

No. Many clients choose to attend therapy without using insurance. Private pay therapy allows for greater flexibility in treatment, increased privacy, and does not require a formal mental health diagnosis.
Why do some people choose not to use insurance for therapy?
Insurance companies often require a mental health diagnosis, may limit the number of sessions allowed, and can request clinical records during audits. Some individuals prefer private pay because it allows therapy to focus fully on their needs without insurance involvement.

Does Northern Lights Therapy accept insurance?

Insurance participation varies by clinician. Most clinicians are in network with Aetna, while a limited number are in network with Blue Cross Blue Shield and United Healthcare. Our office can help determine which clinicians accept specific insurance plans.

Why are some clinicians unable to accept BCBS insurance?

Recent policy changes from Blue Cross Blue Shield significantly changed who is eligible to bill under their plans. Because of these changes, we are currently unable to bill BCBS for services provided by Licensed Associate Counselors and Licensed Master Social Workers for new clients.

To help reduce barriers to care, Northern Lights Therapy offers discounted private pay sessions for individuals with active BCBS coverage when seeing those clinicians.

Does insurance cover couples therapy?

In most cases, insurance does not cover couples therapy. Because of this, couples sessions are typically private pay.

Are reduced fee therapy options available?

Yes. Northern Lights Therapy offers several options to help increase access to care, including intern clinicians with reduced session rates, funding options through Victim Compensation programs, Craig Tiger Act funding, nonprofit partnerships, and occasional discounted services for first responders and veterans.
